I was under the impression that the game could muster challenge on its own, rather than relying on an obtuse UI.

It's a cool game. Early game combat felt a big sloggish(I now hate spiders, thanks for that), but late game the the combat tended to be pretty enjoyable as more enemies became more varied and the environments started requiring more thought. The puzzles tend to be pretty clever, I liked the different...

As a whole, the magic system isn't very appealing as is. Like others have said, repeatedly entering the runes isn't a challenge or tactically engaging, it's just a hassle. I've found this to be mostly true too, though. At the end I had a rogue with ~100 evade in the Lurker's suit and a fighter in full Valor, and the rogue tended to either last as long as or longer than my fighter.
