I'm pretty sure that while the editor is still in beta, you need the steam version of Grimrock to play custom dungeons. You will also need to opt-in to the beta test (right-click the game in your steam library and choose opt-in)... this will download the version of the game which allows you to play...

I downloaded a mod using nexus mod manager,had it install a mod and went into the game and couldnt find my mod anywhere.
I did not download the editor.
Any insight is welcomed.
