I've had every character throw something but the object keeps landing in the cell w/out rebounding onto the pressure plate. Frustrating!

When I throw a dagger into the portal, it's supposed to go into the cell then ricochet onto the panel to close the pits. When I do this, my dagger just goes into the cell and doesn't ricochet onto the panel to close the pits. I'm stuck. Any suggestions?
