numberouane: Keep in mind that there are a lot of secret buttons in the first dungeon, and that one lock (in the SE section) needs lockpicks to be opened.
There's also a section in the NW that's supposed to be completed later, so you'll have to come back to the dungeon anyway.

Just keep hammering at him. The shield will give eventually, and he while does raise it up again, he usually takes some time to do so.
