forum CAPTCHA

Post by matthewfarmery »

Hi, I thought I would post a suggestion, I know a bit about phpbb3, and also about the CAPTCHA system, while this is early days, however unless you change the CAPTCHA, you will be swamped with spammers

now you could say, we should try another board? well you could, but you end up having the exact same problem

the real problem is, visual CAPTCHAs like what you are using are broken, so do not use, as they do not work, pretty much every forum type has this problem

the only solution is to use the included Q&A one, which you can access within the ACP, its been a while since I last visited that area, but you should be able to see where the options are, also when you do enable the Q&A CAPTCHA, don't use questions that can easy be googled, questions like what is the forth planet from the sun, who won etc at a certain date,

questions like that can easy be found, and the system will not help you, and maths questions are out as well,

basically, try something like

complete the following word

W N D W S

or something like that, if you make the questions complex but still easy to do for a human, then you will kill most spam bots, only human spammers will prevail,

oh yes, do a rotation system for the questions, its high maintenance, but its the only effective means to combat spammers,

and congrats on making the game, I've been so looking forward to this for a long time, got a few people interested, but I personally can't wait for next month

congrats and well done :D

The best captchas I've ever seen used an animated 'flag' for an image, and asked the user to type the word on the flag... but no single frame in the animation contained the word you had to watch it move and discern the word over time.
