Level 9 - 3-2-1-3 puzzle

So what is this about? I did the pillared hallway and chekered room, go the scroll from the feet of those statues.

So, I enter this room using the ornate key, assuming the left portal is 1, the middle portal is 2 and the right portal is 3, I go tino 3, then 2, then 1 then 3 again, but everytime I just end up at the statues again. Is there something I am missing? I can't seem to progress any further, no stairs down and no gold key door.

Middle portal is 3, right portal is 2, left portal is 1
