Do stored torches burn out?

Do torches burn out while in your inventory?

Could I stack up on a few, and use them as and when required?

I was carrying like 10 at one point. They only burn out when they're in your hand.

Each torch seems to have it's own fuel level. That level only burns down while you are holding it. Anywhere else (including a wall sconce), it remains at its current level.
