I can run faster than my spells. I can cast them, then run forward, I cop the spell I just cast.
If I try to advance into a tile as an enemy advances into the same tile, get 'blocked', then cast a spell, I cop that spell as If I'd cast it against a dungeon wall.
Is this intended behaviour? I've only really noticed this since 1.1.4.
Killing myself with spells

Yes it is, it's a homage to Dungeon Master.

Re: Killing myself with spells
The first part, perhaps, but surely not the second. Being hit in the face with my own spell because of a invisible tile blocker that's there to stop me stepping into the same square as an advancing enemy can't be intentional.
Re: Killing myself with spells
Actually I hadn't noticed the 2nd effect you describe, odd.

Re: Killing myself with spells
Its infrequent. It happens when I hit the blocker for an approaching enemy, and cast a prepared spell while back-pedalling.

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster
Re: Killing myself with spells
It also happens like Porkdish says. You basically just massacres your own team with fireballs or whatever when casting spells just the instant before the Ogre hits you!
Myself, I've never experienced that thing when you step sideways though.
Also when we're on the topic of spellcasting and hitboxes. Is it intentional that the spells from the mindflayers still hits you even though you're 99% into the square you just sidestepped into? It is pretty annoying to try and sidestep their spells, as it seems like you occupy 2 spaces while your team moves (and you can get hit in both of them). You can't however do this yourself. If you try, your spells/arrows just flies right past your enemies as they gracefully dodge your spells and arrows.
