Compass improvement

Post by Kirinyale »

I'm not sure how many times this might have been mentioned already, but I really think that "N" mark should be added to the compass icons.

And yes, I do know how the real-life compass works, so it's not another ignorant "broken compass" rant. :)

The real problem is that there are a few different arrow coloring conventions in the world. If you ask anyone in Ex-USSR (well... anyone knowing what a compass is :)), they will probably tell you that the North arrow is blue, and the South arrow is red (sort of a simple cold/hot color code). Legend of Grimrock, however, clearly uses red arrow for North and the second, black (which I was at first confusing with dark-blue :)) for south. For Ukrainian players like me, this can be confusing as hell. The only thing that saved me from this problem is the fact that I'm NOT playing in oldschool mode, so I could check and notice the mismatch immediately after finding the compass.

Anyway, just think how much confusion will be gone if one small letter is added to the icons...

Yeah, I was also under the impression that the red arrow should point South (Poland here).

They could just add a small description text like "in this small device, the red arrow always points north".

Is there really a problem if you make the entire map, everything included, upside down?

If someone plays oldschool mode, and he thinks red is south, and maps everything with that presumption, wouldn't that work just fine?

To know the exact geographical direction (north, south, east, west...or NE, SW, NW...what ever you like on a virtual 360° circle) pointed by the game compass needle is redundant. (it does not show it for 'real' anyway)

All what is essential to know is, that it points ALWAYS in the SAME 'in-game'-direction (where ever that may be...where is the magnetic 'north'-pole of 'Grimrock-Land' ?...exactly ?).

...it helps of course to imagine 'red' as 'north' (aka 'up' on your sheet of paper) if you draw maps... but you could also take it as 'west', 'south' etc. ...it does not really matter...'in game'...as long as you stay with your initial ruling.

There are a few places where the game mentions exact directions. The one that is easiest to remember is the "westmost" hint scroll. Perhaps a few others too, don't remember exactly, although I've finished the game recently. And I wouldn't be too sure that more of these won't be added in some addons / new dungeons / sequels etc.
