Is it possible to make it so that the dungeon doesn't extend from top to bottom? i mean using the very same transition but to "another cave" or part of the map?
that would allow us to make maps that resemble cities too...

You're obviously fixed to a set of levels, as that is how the game is built up.
Of course, stairs don't have to be the only option to travel from one level to another. A hallway off the side of the map should be able to bring you to the next level. This has disadvantages, of course. You will notice some loading time, and the next level would have to use the same tileset or it would look really weird. Likewise, you won't be able to lure monsters through the hallway.
By making a hallway on the far right side of level 1, and mimicking that same hallway on the far left side of level 2, you could then have the party be transferred forth and back as they delve into the hallway. You'd have to make sure to catch items being tossed, and drop them on the ground on the other side, though perhaps the teleport effect works for both the party and items.
As for a city, that would be something entirely different.

is there a MAX SIZE for a dungeon floor? Is it bound to the size of the map? I think I heard 32x32 somewhere.
