How to use Zhandul's Orb?

Hi,

how do I use Zhanduls Orb?

Right now I have the staff in the right hand and the orb in the left hand of my wizard. Is that the correct way of using it?

Or is it enough to carry the orb in the inventory?

To gain the benefits of an item orb/staff etc you need to hold it in your hand, to get a direct benefit like casting speed you need to use it to cast your spells.
