Editor in General (Scripting for Dummies??)

Post by The Real Pyxx »

Ok some things to comment about and suggest: First of all, awesome job and can’t wait. Huge fan of LOG already, I can see big plans for this game and any expansions it has coming our way. Second, I wanted to comment on the Editor itself, It does look pretty easy even for someone of a low tech skill such as myself. However I wanting to know if someone from the development team will be coming out for a couple of Tutorials called: “Scripting for Dummies” and “Advanced Scripting for Dummies” The problem I would have is once you get to a spot where I’m not allowed to do something I would like and then would have to go into the script editor and not know exactly how to write out a “real script”.

Say for example dropping from a level via pitfall, into a teleport that teleports you 3 levels away onto a trap door switch that fires non-stop posionous gas into a room filled with monsters that automatically aggro on to you once you’re landed into that room. And the only way out is to kill your way out and find 3 keys that opens the right door and then hopefully your way back up to the level you were on. Or explore until you can find your connections through the dungeon.

Something like this could be done with simple editor? or Script Editor advanced?

If videos for Scripting or Advance Scripting for Dummies are not going to be put out by the Designers then would it be possible for someone else to do them that has experience? I would prefer a designer though since the LOG Editor is going to be new and different from previous map editors I’m sure.

The last thing I would like to ask is that we make a suggestions thread and have people make comments on their suggestions for this Editor.

And I would like to know if at all possible; What were your plans on Dungeon Designs that players or novice map editors or even the Advance and more Experienced Map Editors that people make?? Were we going to be able to share our designs? Will we be able to play other people’s map? AKA like StarCraftII? Just using an example there. Also Will we be able to profit from sharing our maps? Sort of like a Let’s give back to our community thing? Not sure how detailed you were going to make this Editor available to us or rather How far you were going to let it see where it takes our community?

I’m sure whatever your decisions are going to be; Will be in our best interests and will be taking into consideration of the community therein. All in all you have my 100% support. Thanks guys for making such an awesome game.

You're really hanging on to a developer posting those tutorials, but what for?

Lua is NOT a new scripting language. Quite a few people that will be modding LoG are already familiar with the language, and as has been with all the data for the game itself, it's probably the user base that will post the tutorials, and not the developers itself.

Just be patient.

That's fine, however I'm a person who wants to be a Map Maker, but have no clue on where to start with something of this caliber. I'm not really able to go to school to learn this information. While others may have it come easy to them, some others may not; I do know once I get used to it, it wouldn't be an issue. But I want to learn it soon. Rather it be LUA or HTML or C++ whatever it takes. Basically, my request is to have someone explain it to me and others like me that it can be done but in more "simple" terms. Not so much of a difficult request I wouldn't think?

Just download the levels other people make and look at the Lua that's in their files. Or even just make a level with the editor and look at the code it generates and try to emulate that until you start to understand it. That's how 90% of people learn languages anyway.

don't worry.

I'll make maps, mods from grimrock editor, and I have 0 talent in scripting... I think we can already do a lot without scripting!

look again the video to comfort you... it's very powerful without writing a single code line!

yes I noticed it was, but for multi-level scripting is where it's going to get a bit tough. I noticed one comment about trying to use different floors and switches along with teleports. And came back with a comment from Anttii that it would have to be a workaround in the script editor. But it could be done. This is the part I was referring to. Basic Scripting for this game shouldn't be too hard just from what I've seen in the video. However in the Advance Script Editor, that is where I know I will get a bit confused. I'm sure others will too. So the prevent that maybe a basic tutorial on the Advance Script Editor will help us understand a bit more. Which is what I was asking for. A Script for Dummies. lol

they'll make a tutorial when the time will come ;) It's cool to see people with great ideas to make cool dungeons, but I think we should start slowly, with dungeons which are just actually playable and not the Absolute Perfect Maze... :)
