SSAO option makes my computer to crash when pressing a butto

Post by Loïcthegreat »

Hi everybody.

The game is crashing every time I push a button. Its location is in the second level, in a corridor with four cells with teleport.

There are two buttons and, when I activate the first one, the game crashes EVERY TIME ! The screen becomes gray and I have to reboot my computer.

When I activate the second button, nothing happens. It's just the first one...

I tried several times and it occured each time...

I dont know what to do. I've just bought the game and I am very disappointed...

Someone can help me ?

My system specs are :
Core 2 Duo @3,2 ghz
3 go ram
HD 4870
Win XP

PS : English isn't my native language.

Hi Loïcthegreat,
can you please specify your "crashs" a little bit more? A "crashing" program/game under XP should raise just some segmentation error, crash to desktop etc... but bring not the complete system and OS to halt ("screen becomes gray and I have to reboot my computer"). Only hardware and drivers are able to do so.

As you have an ATI card, have you tried disable all fancy catalyst options (overdrive, etc)? Is your catalyst up to date (or to new, some report better results with older catalyst versions)?

cheers

Hi badhabit and thank you for answering !

I have Catalyst 12.4 and fancy options are desactivated...

What I can't really understand is how a game can crash with one and only one same action and not another ? Why the game doesn't crash when I activate the other button (exactly the same...) ?? Are you sure it is a hardware failure ?

Anyway, it's not easy to specify the crash... I push the button then one second after the screen becomes gray with some hatchings from the top to the bottom. Then the music is played repetedly (not really a music, but a sound effect actually).

So the system doesn't respond to any command and I have to reboot it...

EDIT : here is the photo of the screen crash. It has just occured with the SECOND button ! And it's not gray but green this time...

hmm, that this is not 100% reproduceable (some time first, some time second button) let me assume further this is a hardware issue (also, no one before had reported such issue). Have you tried the windowed mode and a lower resolution/quality (as test if somehow the GPU burden has an influence)? Do you know your GPU temperature?

Hi I'm back !

So I upgrated to the last Catalyst driver version (12.6) and nothing changed.

I checked my GPU temperature that comes up to 71°C. I read high GPU temperature was a game specifity so it doesn't worry me. Besides, I have taken all the dust off my computer recently...

Then I have modified ingame options. And it appears that the last one, the option named "SSAO quality", seems to be responsible for the crashes because since I desactivated it, it no longer crash ! I haven't discovered the use of the option...

I thank you, badhabit, for you help and now I wonder why this option makes my computer to crash ! I haven't found any other complain about it and I am wondering : why me ??? ^^

Indeed strange, but good that you found a workaround, have now fun with LoG even beyond the buttons! ;)

(PS: you could take that as indication that there is probably something bogus with your system (consider using a benchmark and/or stress test to find the weak device in your system) or it's a driver issue (in this case probably to new))
