Can you skip a level?

Post by SwampDog »

I'm old enough (50 this year) to enjoy a dungeon crawl like Grimrock. However, I find this game a bit too puzzle-heavy. Do you have to "finish" every level? Can I jump in a pit to just move on to the next one?

Hmm... I don't think you can do what you meant, as in you can't just go from floor 1 straight to floor 3 and skip floor 2. No.

However, some of the puzzles you'll find in the game are more for secrets and extra items than getting to the end of the level. For example is floor 6 where there are 4 major puzzles to get 4 keys. However, you only need 3 of the keys to get to the next floor, the last key is just for the iron door on that floor, so you can skip one of the puzzles if you wanted.

You do not HAVE to find EVERY secret and puzzle before going to the next floor. If you get to the stairs and can continue, you can if you want. Tho sometimes you might miss something that might be useful later, like a better weapon, or armor and such. The only exception to this is floor 10, 11, and 12. When you first get to floor 10, you can find the stairs to floor 11 and go right down them, leading to another stairs straight ahead with nothing to do but go to floor 12. However, the way deeper into floor 12 is blocked by a key that's on floor 10. So you have to find that key first, before continuing down.

But other than that, I don't think there is an actual way to just skip a floor, other than floor 8, the Vault of the dismantler. That floor is completely optional and you can skip right to floor 9.

Hi.

Jiro said it all: Each level needs some attention.

The two shortest levels are 8 and 11; level 8 fulfills two purposes: the "official" way is for bypassing the adventurers around the dismantler, the "inofficial" way is for finding the Dismantler; and lvl 11 is kind of odd, because the major parts of lvl 11 are actually the underground of lvl 10, while the "major" route is just as what Jiro mentioned.
In any other dungeon floor you need to solve a couple of puzzles and riddles (sometimes more, sometimes less), in order to get access to the next floor.
(Naturally lvl 12/13 are different, because you have to meet "The Boss", which is not Bruce Springsteen, but ... ;)
All the best!

Some puzzles are optional. Others are necessary to progress.

On the bright side, I'm sure some fans will make puzzle light dungeons in the Dungeon Editor, so your ideal Dungeon crawl could be a reality soon. :)

All the hard puzzles are optional, I actually skipped the hardest one (I think everyone knows which one I mean). Generally skipping them isn't really recommended, though. At least if you are playing on normal or harder. Because without the optional rewards, combat will become REALLY hard. Not to mention all the exp you are missing from killing monsters.

You should still jump down every pit you see, though. =p
