Hi!

Post by Osvir »

Hi, posting in the "Modding" forum because this is where I will mainly hang out, recently started modding with Grimrock Dungeon Editor, saw the Manual for the first time and I just read a pretty awesome thread here.

I've got loads of inspiration and some ideas, I'll probably make threads and ask questions every now and then again. Currently looking at textures and what can be done to edit and change them. I am not good with any scripting, don't know anything at all to be frank. Looking into some Lua. I prefer to write stories and design atmosphere. Got some stories I would like to take to a test in Grimrock.

I'm currently playing Lands of Lore for the very first time, which is a main inspiration. Also fiddling with Might & Magic 1 for historic purpose, and finished Ultima 1 for the first time.

Thank you Almost Human for a great game and a great editor, looking forward to play with it :)

Peace

Welcome to the Grimrock modding community. I'm sure you'll find no shortage of people willing to help with any editor and/or scripting queries you have. It's a pretty great group of people we have here.

Welcome!
Once you get your self all up and running in modding textures and the like, you can use this thread as a sort of workshop like I have done.

Alright cool, thanks :)

Yeah I'm pretty much blind. Currently trying to work a torch holder (starting small) to change texture but it doesn't seem to work. Placing the .dds texture in the "texture subfolder", editing the "items.lua", reload project and nothing. I think I'm doing something wrong... aah I'll probably figure it out, just takes some time I s'pose.

I'll probably make other threads discussing the different topics instead of bumping this one Neikun, though I get an idea that a General Introduction thread, wouldn't be too bad *shrug* that's up to the Admins of this place.

What I really want to edit and be creative about are the walls, skies, trees, ground, and how do I do that?

I only see 7 "prison_wall_#" how do I create my own 8th and add it into the list inside the Editor?

EDIT: I'm mostly interested in the walls, floors and roofs. I want to take the journey out of the dungeon and into the world. Also working on a M&M1 psuedo-conversion (currently using LoG assets but I've got the very first city functional, except that it's all dungeon). Only got some detail left on it and some monsters. I want to make a village instead :D

I'm also curious if it's possible to redraw a staircase into a ladder instead. A staircase with doors would be cool too.

I know that the eye of the beholder guys made themselves a ladder model.

You will need to download the Grimrock Model Toolkit (GMT) to change the textures of models. This will require to to define new materials in your materials.lua

If you have Skype or something more instant message style, I could probably walk you through the steps of getting a new texture onto a model.

And texturing is a fine way to start -- after all, that's pretty much how I did.

I haven't got much to add, I hope you've grasped the idea of materials, that's what actually determines the textures used by models. You'll actually need to change the material from the model, not the texture or the material file (although if you completely replace a texture, and not make an alternate version to be used along with it, it should still work). The tool for that is the aformentioned and fantastic Grimrock Model Toolkit.

And a heartfelt welcome to the community! If problems arise, don't hesitate to ask, we have resident experts of pretty much any field imaginable. (and you may find answers to many questions just browsing the forums)

We are practically the same. I had no experience and started with textures to make a wallset. You'll find how I started here:viewtopic.php?f=14&t=3882&hilit=retexturing, it has a detailed description at the end. I can still barely script but I've had a great time, and my wallset seems to have gone over quite well all in all. Plus there is no shortage of fine people to help you out. It's probably going to be very hard to make a sky though.

Hi Osvir and welcome to the community! Inspiration and the will to persevere if/when things get a bit frustrating is all you need to mod, so it sounds like you're off to a good start! The community here are very friendly and genuinely helpful, I've not seen any of the customary "RTFM" or "Well, I know how to do it but I'm not going to tell you how" posts that you seem to get in most other forums - so don't be afraid to ask any questions if you come up against a brick wall when trying to accomplish something.

Lands of Lore is an awesome game. I'm not sure if it's nostalgia transformation or not, but I remember it being damn hard in places! I never did finish it. But you've inspired me to see if GOG has it available.

If you're looking at getting started with some re-texturing, check out this Model Retexturing Tutorial on the GrimWiki. The GrimWiki is slowly growing to collect up tutorials and references that are posted here on the forums (so they don't get lost in the ether).

Look forward to seeing what you're imagination creates! :)

Welcome to the forums and our community, hope you stay for a while!

Scripting is not really too hard, it just takes a little while to grasp. Once you know how things work, it really opens up a lot of creative possibilities that are well worth the investment.
