[IDEA] Mod of the Month Compo

Post by JohnWordsworth »

Hey guys,

I remember raising this idea in another thread that was focused on raising mod profiles, but I wanted to entertain the thought of running a monthly poll for 'Mod of the Month'. As a big fan of mods for other games, I like anything that highlights which ones are good to start with. If those are good, I end up playing more.

I know it only highlights one mod a month, and that potentially means some great mods might get missed, but I have thought of some ways to help combat that. And besides, selling one mod a month is better than none.

Suggested format

1. Nominations via forum thread for a week. Voting open for 2 weeks (to give people time to play). Winner gets put into a winner thread. Runner up gets honourable mention there too.

2. Mods can be nominated any number of times, but no more than X per year or Y per mod update or once every 3 months (one of those three). Once a mod has won, it cannot be put forward again.

3. Voting either by forum poll (easiest, but no surprises as its public) or google docs form or something.

4. Winner will get a tiny little prize too (probably a Steam game or GOG game worth a couple of quid).

Thoughts? If there is a majority that likes this idea, I'll kick it off. If there isn't much support for it / people think it's unfair, then I won't. Just let me know :)

Sounds like a good idea... I just really need to finish my mod instead of working on other stuff!

Sounds good!
once every 3 months (one of those three).
I was thinking about the opposite.. what about a mod being automatically nominated for the 3 months after its release ? This would mean it has 3 chances to win, while avoiding the situation where the mod of the month was really released in the previous century

I like competitions because they encourage people to stretch craziness even farther.

The Grimrock Nexus has the option to vote for mods of the month, but if you're like me, you've noticed that hardly anyone votes or endorses or comments.

@Xanathar: That's a good idea. And if a mod makes a ground-breaking new update (adding at least 1 flooor) we'll could nominate them for that month too.

@Xanathar: I'm hoping that by making it a monthly affair, we can encourage people to rally at a given point of the month (instead of just an ongoing voting system). Don't get me wrong, I'm not anticipating that many votes - but even if just 10 of us here vote, it still serves it's purpose - to highlight the best of the crop for people who just want to pick-up-and-play a mod (instead of trawling the Workshop).

@HaunterV: Maybe we should give the free game to a random voter instead of the mod maker? It's only going to be a token game (I'll buy a couple of Steam games during the X-Mas sale for £2.99 and keep them to give out over the coming months - I already have a couple from pre-ordering other games and getting them free).

I am all for this. Not only would it give me a reason to get my nose out of my stuff a couple of times a week, (Which I think we could all use), It could get exposure going for mods that would otherwise be overlooked. I think, any mod should be eligible unless it wins, no matter how old. Kind of like the Hall of Fame process in sports. That way, good dungeons could win down the road in a slow month; and not be passed over because it happened to come out the same month as a large, hyped project. Something else we should be considerate about: when comparing 2 pieces of work, with two different mission statements, The separator could end up being negative critisism ("Yeah, but that that one didn't have a good beginning, etc...)and we would be best served to not allow peoples work to be criticized (especially by us) publicly.

There is a vote system available here on the forums I think we could use for this purpose. It was used for the "What models do you want to see first" Thread (Cant find it now, sorry). Id just like to keep comments positive about the mod you are voting for, avoiding the negative about the one you didn't. Next month, you may be voting for 2nd place this month. Anyway, what has 2 thumbs and likes this idea?? This guy!!

Great idea, John! I'd like to suggest, once the poll is up, we post on the General Game Discussion forum pointing players to the thread with the poll (anything that increases exposure is a good thing, imho).

Cool, seems like a positive response. Assuming the general consensus remains positive, I'll make December a draft run and then we can get an X-Mas mod of the month and start 2013 as we mean to go on!

@Komag: I hope you don't mind me bothering you on a monthly basis to setup a poll :), it would be much easier to do that here in the forums I think (I don't know if you can make them 'private' until the poll closes?).
