Invalid texture filenames in mods

Post by petri »

While doing the mac port, I noticed that some mods contain invalid texture file references, namely filenames ending with *.dds (instead of *.tga). For historical reasons there was a hack in the Windows version that allowed this to pass silently, even though technically it is an error. So I had to add the same hack to the Mac version to maintain compatibility.

I may consider removing this workaround in a future patch, so please watch out and fix any fienames ending with *.dds in your scripts. If the hack ever gets removed invalid texture references will throw an error and broken mods cease to work.

At least Tomb of Zarthos and Kalamar's Fate have dds filenames in their intro cinematics if I remember correctly.

Maybe it's already there, but if not, would it be possible to print warnings on the console if it happens ? I think most of these (as well as upper/lower case issues) are accidental, plus it would reach modders who don't roam this forum.

thanks for the warning BTW!

I've gone over the intro and endings along with all the materials and gfxatlases and particles, I can't find it :?
But then again the version of Tomb of Zarthos in my editor is 1.2 but the one on nexus and steam is 1.0

I will finish up some changes and repost this mod later in the week just to be safe

Thanks for the heads up.

good to know.

I would suggest to remove the hacks now while the modding community is still young, "nip it in the bud" so to speak. Let it be settled once and for all from this time forward. Any current broken mods can then be fixed, and the standard is forever set

Noted, going through my stuff to double check and convert if need be. I agree with Komag that we can go ahead and nip this one while we are all actively working on stuff. (Oooooh, speaking of which, isn't Komags dungeon coming out in the next week or two?)

Thanks. I'm pretty sure I don't have any messed up files. But I'll check. At least if there are any mistakes now I know before it's out.

If I understand it correctly:

Wrong: The file is called "bla.dds" and is referenced in the cinematics as "bla.dds"
Right: The file is called "bla.dds" and is referenced in the cinematics as "bla.tga"

Because in the Wine Merchant's Basement my cinematics are wrong too and I'll have to put up a fix before the Mac release.
When was that again? :)
Did you visit the Wine Merchant's Basement? And heard about the Awakening of Taarnab?

I believe that's right. Same as for normal textures.
