Magic Casting and Key Bindings

Post by e8hffff »

I haven't played the game yet but as far as I can fathom there is no key binding for rune activation?

In Dungeon Master you could cast spells with the numerical keys, and they had to be sequenced. Why has LoG taken the less feature path? Is this another case of making a PC Game, Console ready? If so then it's probably the last game I buy. I purchased thinking that I was supporting old school gaming devs.

I hope I'm wrong or I hope a patch or release has the changes made to allow flexibility. It sure isn't hard adding some extra binding to DxInput or your own routine that handles the keys.

A recommendation could be for keys 0 to 9 for runes, and 0 to cast. 1-4 could be reassigned to other keys like the function keys.

As you can have four mages in your team it could be hard to use keys to cast spells.

On the other hand you could select active mage first then it could work that way.

Yep it was based on who you had selected. All character could do magic, it's just were they proficient at it. In DM you could practice up any character for any skill. Even throwing rocks.

Search is your friend, newcomer. :D

Most of the questions you've asked have been answered many times over.

Currently, there is no keybinding to character functions in Grimrock. Some changes could be made at a later date (after more pressing things on the to do list are done), but the gist of it is there is no such thing as the "active" character in the current interface. It's almost entirely mouse-driven outside of movement. Right-clicking and left-clicking on the icons does different things for example.

Also, yes you will get a direct download to the installer on the same page your Humble email linked you to upon launch. If you've deleted that page for some reason, you should PM the mod or one of the devs for assistance.

FAQ #18: "There can be several spellcasting panels open at a time, so it's actually more convenient to do everything with a mouse."

I don't even want to imagine the hassle if you try 'clicking' the runes with a controller... So rest assured, never, EVER is there going to be a console version of LoG.

Actually, I have a bindings question. Will it be possible to use the Arrow Keys rather than WASD for movement?

If so, that'll be really handy, since I'm really oldskool in that regard; never moved onto WASD.

For example, My Skyrim bindings, are... unique... they're almost entirely on the right hand of the keyboard, using DEL, END, PGDWN, NUM0, etc.

 Do you happen to be left-handed, by chance?

Also, yes, you can configure the basic controls.

Don't feel alone. I'm old school as well - arrow keys(and surrounding) for life :)

High five!

Actually, I'm right-handed, but I do some things as if I were left-handed; like holding my knife and fork. It used to drive my etiquette obsessed grandparents nuts. :D

As for keyboard; its just that arrow keys have been the norm for so long; since the days of Doom, that I still use them. The original Unreal Tournament updated me slightly so Left/Right arrows became strafing, which was fine as mouselook negates the need for turning keys. But not much has changed since then.
