A question of spears

What weapon class do the spears belong to? Is it true they don't have an appropriate skill?

It is melee weapon that has longer range. Probably the only skill you can use to improve spear attack is Assassination.

They might count as one of these 3 things, Swords, Daggers, or assassination. While I am only assuming a spear could be one of those.

While Machete has "Skill: Swords" on its description note, Legionary Spear is classified only as "Reach Weapon". Nothing more.

That's strange, I thought it might fit in staves if nothing else. I didn't know reach weapons was a category.

Maybe this means there are halberds or other polearms later on?

That could be the case.

So that means spears would become pretty useless after a while, unless they come with bonuses that make up for not getting the huge accuracy/damage bonuses you'd get with a melee weapon mastery.

Yes, the Spear is an oddball and does not belong to any weapon group. That's the price you have to pay for having the reach ability.
