Love the game, hate the puzzles. Recommend a mod?

Yeah, but if you look at the games (and the genre) that Grimrock intended... That's rarely (if ever) a feature of this style of game. IMO LoG is the best of class visually, and places decently among the best of genre.

If you want story, try dark spire(on the DS). Weird as hell, yet still an old school dungeon crawl.

Also, don't lose hope. With the latest update the possibilities are practically endless. I am more than sure more deep character interaction is going to be in, and less puzzle-centric maps will start appearing, owing to the fact that there are bound to be modders like me who couldn't script a complex timed puzzle to save their lives.

We are still a very young community.

You might want to try The Lost Continent.
Few puzzles, Open areas, many many new skills/crafting/gameplay elements/items, one big quest and a few side quests.
A trip of a thousand leagues starts with a step.
