This really helps put in perspective why Grimrock's more minimal GUI is much more preferred in their art style.

Well to honest big GUI never bothered me , i always thought that might and magic 6-8 had large view window and it dosent need to be larger . Same goes for Ishar , vision screen was huge no need to minimazie GUI. Of course there were games they had to small vision screen and to large GUI , of example gold box games.

You cannot even see the ogre in oldschool pic. Seriously without preexisting knowledge of the ogre no-one would guess it is there with only a slight darker blotch.

To eispfogel: I recommend amending that to either require some sort of check to see camo-ogre (it's hard to see even in the original), or simply encounter it when the players walk on the bridge.

To be honest, I didn't see it in the original before you mentioned it. Anyway, you could tell it by its animation =)

The animation of getting having your face bashed in by a huge club will serve as a subtle hint to let the player know a forest ogre could be nearby.
