How to import custom model with materials?

Post by Conchron »

I'm using MeshLab to convert my model and converting it works just fine, but, I only get one material once it's been converted and I have three materials on the model. Any clues as to what I'm doing wrong?

What I'm trying to do:

This is what MeshLab turns it into:

Edit:
I guess I should say that I made the model in Googel Sketch Up.

Wonder if it's worth exporting as a collada (dae) file and importing, I know that blender can import that kind of file, not sure about meshlab though

Sketch up only exports as collada, then I use MeshLAb to export into obj so that I can put it in GMT and save it as model. Somewhere along the way my materials turn into one instead of three and the lantern turns into one solid material.

I've tried to use Blender but it's too complicated for me.

Have you tried using the GMT's Assimp Importer, it lists Collada as one of the file types?

I tried importing the dae file that way earlier and it didn't work, so I stopped trying. After reading your post I went back and used the assimp importer to import an obj file and it worked like a charm. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
