Dexterity, I need Dexterity

Post by wired »

My Warrior, actually level 4, has Dexterity 10. Whatever weapon I use, I didn't have more then 0 Accuracy (Machete 15/0, Spear 16/0, Axe 16/0, Cudgel 20/-1). I've trained Maces 4 (he is a Minotaur). I'm really depressed when I look at the skills. :( Are there better maces to come? Is it better to restart with more dex? A warrior who can't hit... how pathetic. :x

Accuracy goes up the more points you put in the wanted weapon skills. Using weapons that do not belong into the trained weapon class is like using an untrained weapon and when untrained you won't hit the broad side of a barn.

Now minotaurs have a very low dexterity at start so they have an Accuracy penalty to deal with and Maces 4 - that's 4 out of 50 - is not really something to bragg about. Also you need to keep in mind that several mace class weapons come with their own Accuracy penalty. Keep training him in Maces (plus using them) and he'll get better.

Generally, a front-rank warrior should have Dexterity as high as you can reasonably manage. Strength is actually of secondary importance - it gives a small damage boost and is important for carrying capacity if you plan on using heavy armor, but Dexterity provides base accuracy and evasion, which have a bigger impact on your overall effectiveness. This is particularly true when using mace-type weapons, which generally carry a hefty accuracy penalty.

It's also worth bearing in mind that if you're wearing armor without being proficient in it, you'll take further penalties.

For a minotaur warrior, I'd suggest something like Str 16 / Dex 12 / Vit 14 / Will 10, and the Head Hunter and Skilled traits. (Drop Head Hunter for Agile or Evasive if there's another minotaur in the party who has it.) This will leave you with 4 skill points to spend - if you want to focus on maces, put all four there to start and split points between maces and armors until you have whichever armor proficiency you plan to use in the long run.

Generally you are right but for LoG i strongly disagree because of the way how weapon skills work: they provide both Accuracy and Damage.

It's true that Dexterity determines base Accuracy and Evasion but that's about it. Placing stat points into Dexterity on character creation may give him/her a little boost at startup but after leveling up once or twice more skill points go into the weapon skill of choice and Dexterity as the base of Accuracy becomes secondary .. at best. Just consider what you will get for +1 to Dexterity: +1 to Accuracy (always) and +2 to Evasion (only IF(!) Dexterity is over 11). At this ratio putting points into Dexterity only makes sense when creating an Evasion specialist. In all other cases it's a waste of points the higher your characters level up and the better their skills get.

Now you are right in regard of Strength. 1 point into it gives +0.5 Damage and +3 kg carrying capacity. Also both these aspect become neglectible once your weapon skill of choice adds damage or - as a minotaur headhunter - you found your first skull and - if you need it - you unlocked the porter ability.

The most benefit from your precious stat points is gained by putting them into Vitality and Wisdom. These stats define how much +life or +energy a character gets per level up so the higher these stats are the better he performs in the long run.
