Timed puzzle suggestion for Grimrock 2
I finally managed to complete the timed Sword of Nex timed puzzle on Grimrock 1 over the winter and after revisiting an old thread here today found another poor soul who cant complete the original game because he or she is stuck at that point too.
I dont mind these puzzles combined with thought puzzles too, but what we all have to remember is we dont all have good manual hand dexterity or sometimes even mind to hand dexterity, even after doing all the hints of lightening the party, turning the graphics options down ETC it can be very difficult for arthritic (as I am) or disabled or older gamers.
The Nex Sword timed puzzle is not an option, it needs to get finished to progress any further.
I'm not sure what the perfect solution would be? and I know some mentally and physically fit gamers would hate any cheat mode, but nobody would have to use it, it would just be a last grasp choice for disabled to get by a puzzle they can never complete and enjoy the rest of the game.
The other option as I see it is to make all the speed puzzles side quests and none essential for progress, seems fair to me.
Sorry if this has been bought up and addressed before but I think its a fair and important point.
On a more positive note, really looking forward to Grimrock 2, after the massive disappointment of Thief 4 this is now my hope for 2014.

This is not true.Grim Reaper wrote:The Nex Sword timed puzzle is not an option, it needs to get finished to progress any further.
The progress related part inside the Halls of Fire is the Round Key that can be gained long before the puzzle for the Sword of Nex is complete. Everything done after reaching the key is optional. The puzzle might give you a pretty good sword which in itself allows the party to do an optional task named "The Fighter's Challenge" but neither puzzle, sword or challenge are needed to progress further.

I stand corrected, its been a while.
Thanks for the correction.
But still the majority of my post stands, the Nex sword is a valuable weapon to progress further in a more efficient manner and its a shame some arthritic, elderly and disabled gamers who other wise can play the game fine are denied this weapon because they are not so manually or otherwise dexterous as most people.
Do you see any problems with my suggestions otherwise Dr?
Thanks.

There is no "one size fits all" in gaming. Making all speed puzzles side quests would hurt the game and make it less entertaining IMO. There are LoG mods which focus on none-speed puzzles. They are nice for relaxed play but they don't get to the intense experience that LoG is ment to be.Grim Reaper wrote:Do you see any problems with my suggestions otherwise Dr?
The Hall of Fire puzzle/sword/challenge part is optional. Even the key there is optional when you are able to find all other Round Keys on level 6. This considered AH did a pretty good job in regard of player abilities.

I see, so long as it suits you, you are happy.Dr.Disaster wrote:There is no "one size fits all" in gaming. Making all speed puzzles side quests would hurt the game and make it less entertaining IMO. TGrim Reaper wrote:Do you see any problems with my suggestions otherwise Dr?
And make it less entertaining for Who exactly? yours was the exact worse case answer scenario I predicted when posting this.
Stop being so selfish, I started off physically fit in life too, never expected so many bad health hurdles thrown against me for no fault of my own ... if you can escape life with no bad health, good luck to you but dont get smug and think it cant happen and you will be OK.
Bad luck and ill health can happen to anyone anytime.
I guess you probably still live with your parents with an attitude like that

Would you play (or keep playing) a game that does not suit you?Grim Reaper wrote:I see, so long as it suits you, you are happy.
An example: i'm an old Diablo 1 die-hard; played the game for about 4 years flat in ways you'd call insane. After that it was D2 for about 10 years, including breaks. Then came D3 which does not suit me. Didn't touch it for over a year now. Bad design. Boring. A dead game.
A good game features a good mix of stuff. From a dungeon crawler i expect exploration, puzzles, combat, ambience, surprise and so on. LoG does all this pretty well PLUS: it's also real-time based
P.S.
About that cheat mode. LoG has a console, a dungeon editor and huge modding support which makes it pretty easy to get your hands on anything you feel left out on. For example activate and fire up the console, type 'spawn("nex_sword")' and hit Enter to create it right in front of your party. Repeat as often as you like. It's no fun at all but hey! you wanted to know.

It's up to the designers to find the right balance and AH already showed that they can do it.

Forget I ever brought this up, its all about YOU now.
Sigh.
Some folk will argue with their shadows if they get a chance.
YOU JUST DONT GET IT.

On the contrary, you were quite clear what this is about:Grim Reaper wrote:YOU JUST DONT GET IT.
It's not my fault when you can't stand other people's opinions and take them as personal insult for no obvious reason.I dont mind these puzzles combined with thought puzzles too, but what we all have to remember is we dont all have good manual hand dexterity or sometimes even mind to hand dexterity, even after doing all the hints of lightening the party, turning the graphics options down ETC it can be very difficult for arthritic (as I am) or disabled or older gamers.
There already are threads here about the game's general speed, how it can (could) be slowed down (own and external means), how people with slow hands or systems can get the real fast puzzles done including the use of scripted tools doing it all for them and so on. Really, it's nothing new, AH prolly heard and read everything about it.
If you are interested in what AH feels about your suggestion
well you'll have to wait for AH to reply. My point of view has been made: speed puzzles like to get the Sword of Nex are already side-quest, so AH has already taken your argument into consideration. When a puzzle is tough one expects something good behind it, thus in a slowed down main-quest road it won't show up.to make all the speed puzzles side quests and none essential for progress
Actually i don't see AH re-design LoG2 further towards this. It would prolly be way easier to kick LoG's real-time concept out and make the game turn-based. For sure some people would like the game to be like that but AH already made clear in both their dev blog and forum posts that this is not going to happen.

What an ambassador for the game you are.
And to think I entered this thread feeling positive about the new game and now feel pissed off.
Thats quite an achievement you managed.
Well done, you could not be more diplomatic if you tried.
Wanker.
