Longer lasting light

Post by Mr.Grocki »

Hi all. Just joined the forum.
I played Grimrock briefly, not long after it first came out.
But I only got through a few levels because I kept running out of torches (I'm probably a bit slow :-))
Now, I see that modding is possible, so perhaps some kind person will tell me if I'm able to have unlimited torches.
Note: I don't necessarily want to do other mods. I've played Skyrim and over-modded it to the point where it was too easy.
No, just having enough light would do me fine.
Advice would be appreciated.

PS: I think the game is brilliant - thanks, Developers. I first fell for this genre back in the Intellivision days with Treasure of Tarmin, then graduated to the Amiga and Dungeonmaster. Later, I played endless repetitions of Dungeon Siege on the PC. So I'm really looking forward to finishing Grimrock  .

I'm not sure, if I got you right. If you ask, if you can make a MOD with unlimited light - yes: by certain items. In Grimrock there are two kinds of torches, a normal one and a so called "everburning torch". The second one does never appear in the original game but you can use it in a Mod. Also there is a magic item, the Orb of Radiance, that emmits light.

If you are asking, if you can change the behaviour of the original game by the editor: I wouldn't know how...

You could simply enable the console and type in to spawn yourself an everburning torch (can't remember what its technical title is off hand).

To enable the console all you have to do is to change/add the following lines to the config file at Documents/Almost Human/Legend of Grimrock/grimrock.cfg:

console = true
consoleKey = 192 <--uses tilde as console key (US Keyboard, 223 for UK)

Load the game and then open the console and type:

spawn("torch_everburning")

pick up your new torch from the ground :)

alternatively, you can have the Orb of Radiance using:

spawn("magic_orb")

Hey, thanks guys. That seems to have answered my question. All I want to do is avoid running out of torches and having to trudge around in the dark trying to locate more. Seems like that was just about all I had time for when I played it earlier.

Guess I'll try to set up the console. The Orb of Radiance is a spell? Which would seem to indicate that it needs to be activated occasionally.

Cheers :-)

The Orb of Radiance is a magic item.

It works like a wand in LoG: Your Mage holds it in his hand an you can create spells "through it".

Mind: magic light in LoG is always a bit blueish. Some people dislike that. Torch-light is more warm in colour.

What about just casting the 'Light' spell? (Unless you are playing the game without a mage.)

It could be an interesting LoG2 mod, to allow a mage PC to adjust the tint of their light spell. 8-)

@Isaac: Haha - that would be cool. The tint of the light could be affected by the item being used to cast the spell (a red orb = slightly reddish light).

Hi again. Can't seem to get the console working. I modified the config OK with both the above lines, but I've discovered that I don't know how to actually open the console. I assume one does it during game play?

A few things to make sure when trying to activate the console (it can be a tad fiddly!).

1. It's worth making sure you're running the latest version of Grimrock (not a problem on Steam, but if you're on other platforms - download the latest).

2. Close the game. Edit the config file. Then re-launch the game. If you edit the file while the game is open, it's possible the changes will be overwritten by the game before it reads it again.

3. The tilde key '~' can be tough to find. But you should be able to press it any time that the game is running (just during normal game play). It will appear over the top quarter of the screen or so. Just as a note, on my mac, the consoleKey is 220, which corresponds to the § ± key in the top left of the keyboard. Not sure if this was the default, but I can't imagine I set it myself!

Hope this helps!
