Dang it! I've scoured the entire first level, but I can't find that compass yet.
I'm certain it will be essential for the no automap run...
Is it supposed to be on the first level somewhere? Should I search harder there before progressing to the lower levels?

Was it relatively easy to find was it hidden?

Yeah I found it on level 2. How do you use it as putting on the face of the characters does nothing.

Alright, I'll search level 2 for it. IIRC, it needs to be in one of the member's hands for it to work.

looked to me like it had to go in hands like torches and then it showed you direction.

It works when it's in your inventory as well. Just try testing it by turning. It works =)
