RE: Game Engine - Money makers

Post by Eleven Warrior »

Hello all long time no reply lol.

I was wondering if AH could let us use the Grimrock 2 engine to produce mods that can be sold. Of course AH would charge a percentage for the Engine use as with engines like, Unreal and others. At the same time mods can still be free as usual.

This would allow for better models, sounds, etc...... I am not saying charge $50 for a mod but something reasonable, like $5. I would like to see the Grimrock engine become like other game engines that I have come across, but that's up to AH. AH could make a little more money on the side for future Grimrock engines that are better.

The editor should still be the same as the free editor but maybe a few extras for people wanting to create a Mod for sale.

Anyhow this is just a suggestion and wanted to know if this is viable.

While I wouldn't call it "the worst idea ever" since the engine we use is pretty nice to work with, releasing a game engine is altogether a different business from making & selling games. And frankly speaking, it's a business which we don't really have the resources or the interest to do. :)

I'm sure if a team working on a mod got to a state where their game was using almost entirely their own assets and it was all of a very high / polished quality there would be scope for private discussion with AH about using their engine to release a full (separate) game. However, 99% of mods primarily use the core game assets (or re-textured variations thereof) and so I don't think there would be much benefit from trying to market them - I think the mod community works so well because there's no money involved!

I also imagine that there's many man-hours of work required to get an engine to a state where you just give it out to the public to toy with and then you've gotta write documentation and maintain it going forward. I suspect you'd need a lot of subscribers (or a high-price) to make it worth it and it can't be as much fun as making games :p.
