Which version of Windows 7 for LoG 2?

Post by Zo Kath Ra »

I'm still using Windows XP, but only for playing games.

Will LoG 2 run faster on Windows 7?
If so, which version should I buy?
- 32 bit vs. 64 bit
- Home / Professional / Ultimate

Does it make any difference if I buy it at a computer store or an OEM version on Ebay?
(other than the latter being cheaper)

W7 64bit runs fine! Very few problems at all, few very old games may fail.
For dos games i use dosbox - runs fine, too.
32bit programs work without errors on my system.
If you buy a cheap version - as seen at amazon for example, you may forced to do activation by telephone call.
It works with two different w7 dvds for me.

At first, i thought of set up a dualboot sys with xp + w7, but everything runs as under xp!
W7 64 professional is recommended, ultimate not really..

Performance of Grimrock? No difference for me.

I doubt that the version of Win7 would make a meaningful difference to Grimrock's performance unless you're really into enabling every optional component to the point of bogging the system down generally.

32 bit vs 64 bit shouldn't matter either. XP is a better choice if you want to run 16-bit Windows (aka Windows 3.1) games, but that's a pretty niche consideration for an OS purchase.

Well the 32vs64 bit discussion is laughable. It just boils down to how much memory you have in your system. As 32 bit can only address close to 4gb of memory. Which well, I don't know anyone who still uses that few. Most systems these days have at least 8gb.. most 16... some 32.. You need a 64bit OS to address any memory above that 4k. So yea... 64 is the only way to go really...

Any version of windows will do. Buying 7 Ultimate is just retarded so not going to even talk about that one. both home and professional are fine, doesn't make a difference at all for gaming... and as you still use XP and ask the questions you ask, I do not think you need professional. So 64bit home win 7 will be a massive improvement over your ancient XP configuration ..

The retail version and the OEM version differ in the licensing afforded. The retail installer allows you to remove/reinstall the OS on to another PC later on; the OEM version is intended to ship with the hardware, and is considered part of... non-reusable on other hardware.

*At one time [possibly still?] resellers had to bundle OEM versions with PC hardware to comply with the licensing; but instead of the OEM PC [as was intended] some vendors found that just a PC mouse in the box was enough to comply.
