7.1 surround?
Few things provide better atmosphere than an immersive video game with surround sound. Will Grimrock 2 support 7.1? I don't think the original did. Me and my headset are looking forward to playing the game very much. Hopefully in the company of surround!

err .. you know that a headset a.k.a. headphones never represent more than plain old 2.0 stereo?Ixnatifual wrote:Me and my headset are looking forward to playing the game very much.

I've never tried any of them but there are headphones that are listed as 5.1 and even 7.1 out there.

There is no way to simulate a convincing surround experience with only 2 speakers.Skuggasveinn wrote:I've never tried any of them but there are headphones that are listed as 5.1 and even 7.1 out there.

In other words: if you ain't got a 5-7.1 system you won't have surround.
Now that Tiamat - and only this one - might go as surround due to having discrete speakers. But 200 bucks for a headset?

Re: 7.1 surround?
Though I don't know what the quality would be like, a headset could incorporate multiple speakers per earpiece to create a surround effect.

I'm guessing it would also be pretty easy to support. It's probably just a matter of knowing where a sound emanates from relative to the player and based on that choosing which speakers will play the sound and adjust volume of each speaker to more accurately "place" the sound.

Re: 7.1 surround?
Afaik grimrock uses OpenAL, which should be able to handle surround; I don't know if it requires some specific setup from the code side though.

Re: 7.1 surround?
All you need are stereo headphones. Check this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUDTlvagjJA
The main problem is that you only have two ears, which means you hear stereo. To localize objects, the brain measures the time difference of soundwaves reaching the left and right ear. The problem with true "7.1" headphones is that the sound from the speaker on the left side of the headphone does not reach the right ear and vice versa. To this end "virtual surround" may help. However, the video attached above was created when using two microphones inside an artifical head. Thus, it is possible to perfectly localize just with stereo headphones.

Re: 7.1 surround?
No it's not possible. You need at least 4 speakers for front/rear/left/right placement. 2 speakers only allow you to pinpoint a place between >them< whereever they are in your room. The link you posted is just stereo used to the fullest.Quickbeam2k1 wrote:Thus, it is possible to perfectly localize just with stereo headphones.

The video shows that it IS possible to locate with stereo heaphones. How should you still need 4 speakers (inside an headphone). Note that I'm speaking of a stereo heaphone not of stereo speakers!
