I know, and the Devs even pointed out to someone in another, if an area is too hard, they want you to actually leave the place and go somewhere else to level up.
I am sorry, but that is shameful. In Grimrock 1 you were always going forward, never going back except for secrets. Here, they tease you with puzzles that are impossible till later after you find some other item, clue, or work around in another dungeon. That is BAD, and BORING, having to backtrack slowly and being so open ended, as you point out, you can never tell if something can be done or not. I almost left a puzzle I couldn't solve, thinking I must have to come back to it later, only to solve it soon after without leaving. You can no longer till when you are actually working on a puzzle and just not getting the clues, or if it is a big waste of time and you should have left already...
