Twigroot Tunnels Weights

In Twigroot Tunnels there are a number of pits obstructed by weights and chains. Seems like something I should be able to operate but haven't figured out how. Are these just inanimate decorations? If not, what do I need to do? Thanx.

Lovin' the game so far. Blows the mind how much detail there is!

As far as I know they are are just there for scenery, you can't interact with them.
