I think this is a puzzle with pressure plates.

I just did it a few hours ago just by trial & error. I think you must leave middle grates raised. The goal is to shoot two bolts when pressing the button. I think that will clear a path. I am not entirely sure.

My mistake, the face is actually giving a hint on the puzzle. Where the face looks i've been there from somewhere else.
