I dug up a huge portion of the island myself (the first one, the beach area). Sometimes I randomly dig in various areas just to see if anything happens.

I was surprised that digging unerthed the tile in front of the party instead of the one they are standing on; but I can see why; having seen how a found treasure container can appear.

I did dig up quite a lot of dirt; some of it under the waves.

There's a guy over on another forum I frequent who is trying to dig up the entire island.
SpoilerShow
Thus far, I believe he's through Shipwreck Beach, Twigroot, The Forgotten River, and Keelbreach. So far, it seems as though he hasn't found anything that doesn't have an associated note.
Not sure how true that is.

I would love to see treasure *randomly* generated on levels at game creation for explorers who dare to dig their game away. I dug up all of the first level and also found only one buried chest. I like the idea of hidden treasure at random spots - this would add much more replay-ability when restarting the game.

It would transform the searching process from a puzzle game to a tedious no-brain gameplay. I'm afraid I dislike this idea.

That depends on your definition of what is "necessary". If you feel like you haven't completed the game unless you have picked up every root, piece of meat, and whatever trash off the ground you find, then I get your point. However, if you don't mind leaving a bit of trash by the wayside, who's it going to hurt if you miss a few buried treasures filled with some herbs or ammo?

On my first playthrough, I dug up the WHOLE first area, the beach area. After that I realized treasures were going to be rare, and then I saw in the menu that there were only 11 so I quickly stopped wasting my time with digging lol. However, I do randomly did in spots that look like they might have a chest (I've actually found 3 that way). It's funny cause then I get the map for the treasure much later on in the game, running around in circles trying to figure out where the chest is not thinking about the fact that the chest already there is the one for the map -.- rofl

Have you ever done the digging mini game in Zelda - A Link to the Past? It's so annoying trying to dig up that random heart piece... and you want to do it to the whole game instead of a small closed of area? You're mad.

I like the idea of chests with random treasure; but nothing (random) that is crucial to the game.

So I like the idea of "set" game pieces are in a set location. However, it'd be cool if you dug around and just from time to time, found random treasure. (A chest with a beat up sword, some beat up armor, maybe a lock pick or two, or a healing potion) - just general "stuff" to help your party along. Stands to reason that folks might have buried treasure on this crazy island (and never lived to reclaim it). So that would be cool if every time you dug in a new spot (so you can't dig in the same spot over and over), there was a 5 to 10% chance, you might find some random treasure items.

Maybe higher percentage around the beach (most logical) so that way your party gets stuff to help them from the start; and lesser chances as you go into the island further.
