Game crashes when saving after about 45 minutes

Post by Akarillon »

Hi,

I have played about 7 hours of Legend of Grimrock 2, but I'm way too annoyed at this bug and have to get it resolved before continuing the game.
The crash happens when I am saving, either at a crystal or manually, but only after about 40-45 minutes.
I've tried looking for a logfile or a way to put the game into a mode that actually gives me feedback on errors.

Information about my system:
Game version: 2.1.18 (Steam version)
Graphics card: AMD Radeon R9 290X (Tried installing latest drivers)
Display: 1920x1080/Fullscreen

The only weird thing I've noticed is that the bottom text in the log file says:
Loading save game C:\Users\Akarillon\Documents/Almost Human/Legend of Grimrock 2/savegame01.sav
Why are the slashes changing direction in the middle of the path?

Thanks for any help.

Kind Regards,
Akarillon

You're saying the game crashes without(!) giving an error message while it is saving after you played 40+ minutes?
This excludes an internal game error. In that case you would get a pop-up windows with an error message and an entry in the game's log file. This leaves an external cause i.e. the game process being killed by something.

There is no shutdown or power off issue, right?
(this would indicate a problem with CPU/GPU/PSU)

My guesses:
1) a hard drive or file system error
After the game did crash run a check on both drive and file system: right-click a drive in windows explorer and select properties, goto the "Tools" tab, click the error check button, select both radio buttons and click start. If a restart is requested do so.

2) a ram modul going bad
in case you are running Win7: after the game crashed click the "Start" button, enter "mdsched" into the search field and hit enter to start a ram check.
Vista and Win8 have a similar tool build in; google how those are run.

3) a overheated component (not CPU/GPU)
I doubt you have a heat issue on GPU or CPU; your system would behave different. But to make sure you should do is keep an eye on temperature sensors in general with a tool like HWMonitor.

No error message sounds like a page fault or a Lua panic. If you run the game from the command prompt, you'll be notified of either one.
I have had a few page faults from saving in large dungeons but they are extremely rare.

In case of a LUA panic or page fault shouldn't there be an entry in the windows protocol / event logs?

I believe a page fault should appear in Event Viewer, yeah. Lua panics not necessarily.

I am amazed at the helpfulness of this forum. Thank you.

I've tried running a disk check(on both the OS disk and the game disk) and a memory scan, but nothing changed.
I do have a temperature scanner on at all times, so it's not a overheating issue.
Tried running the Compatability test all night, but didn't get any results.

I checked the event viewer and found 1 event of unexpected shutdown:

Code: Select all

Faulting application name: grimrock2.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x5444fc14
Faulting module name: grimrock2.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x5444fc14
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x0009c81c
Faulting process id: 0x9dc4
Faulting application start time: 0x01d03290c7584ae2
Faulting application path: E:\Steam\steamapps\common\Legend of Grimrock 2\grimrock2.exe
Faulting module path: E:\Steam\steamapps\common\Legend of Grimrock 2\grimrock2.exe
Report Id: 53f46746-9e88-11e4-ac57-14dae91df89c
This event has only occured once, when the error has not happened 7-8 times.
After the disk/memory checks the error happened twice as fast aswell.
I'll try running the game in debugmode and from the console to see what happens.

Did you try checking steam cache for LoG2?

That was the first thing I did. :)

I finally got an error message. This time it took about 1 hour and 15 minutes before I crashed, but did manage to get a screenshot.

Exception code 0xc0000005 is an access violation, you can try the options listed in that link.

I tried setting all needed folders to the same privilege, but didn't help.

I do believe I've found the answer though.
I'm running a third party software that interferes with all games.
It's called Raptr and records everything I do in a game while I am playing.
Fixed the issue by closing Raptr while I play LoG2.
It's works fine with every other game, but didn't cooperate with this one.

Thanks all for the help. :)
