That's the way it has to be on Ironman or,

I remember Wizardry for the NES was like this, and my friend would turn off his Nintendo and pull out the cartridge as fast as possible after someone in the party died or lost a level or something, before the game could "save" the current progress. So basically, the game nearly constantly updated the single save file.

One could ask what's the point of playing the game in an "ironman" mode and then cheat? For the achievement? Why not just cheat harder? =)

That wouldn't work, because when you loaded you'd be at the same spot you ALT+F4'ed on with 5 hp.

Not if the game only saved on exiting to the main menu.
