I think he was refering to etrian odyssey (three in US, only one in europe.... so unfair (had to pay 3 times the price of the third one to import it... and to pirate the 2nd one... not proud of it..))
a forth is comming up, on 3ds
if you don't fear to grind a lot, theses 3 games alone are enough reason to by a Nintendo DS (or you can wait a few month for the 4, and if worth it by a 3DS).

Yeah those are the ones he means but if you prefer games without the ultra cute graphics there are other options. For example there is The Dark Spire on DS, the Wizardry title on PSN for the PS3, Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey (thought it isn't a traditional DC). There is even Class of Heroes 1 thought it definitely goes into the cutesy range too. Of course if you can speak and read Japanese and aren't above importing there are literally over a dozen more, all made in the last 5 years or so for the most part. They love Dungeon Crawlers over there.

In a way, FROM's Souls series or Atlus' Persona games are dungeon crawls, too. Just not of the kind we're talking about.

Yep, there are plenty of Japanese Dungeon Crawlers. In fact, Etrian Odyssey re-awakened love for the dungeon crawler in my case.

Although, as I've noted, they often mix parts of Eastern and Western RPGs, as they have Dungeon Master type exploration with turn-based battles.

Also, 7th Dragon, and Touhou Labyrinth count as other choices. Although the former is more like dragon quest with Etrian mechanics, and has sadly never been translated. There is Touhou game for everything as well, and Labyrinth has been fan-translated.

Actually, you don't have to grind too much if you've designed a really good party. Well, not including the post-game content, but that is always ridiculous. Etrian I is actually pretty easy if you abuse Protectors with Provoke and Parry, and the Medic's Immunize, whilst laying out damage with your Landsknecht and Alchemist.

Etrian III is actually even better, due to it having multiclassing and a huge variety of options. And only one REALLY broken combo people know about (the whole Pirate/Shogun using dual blades and self-taught swordplay being chased by a Warrior/Pirate). Although Ninjas that learn Zodiac magic are also pretty silly.

Etrian Odyssey, Class of Heroes, Dark Spire, countless Japan-exclusive Wizardry titles (a recent one was released almost a year ago on PSN, it's quite good)

If you don't like the artstyle that's your problem, you'll be missing out on some great game just because of the character designs. Your loss.

Yeah, I abused the hell out of Immunize when I played. I ended up dropping my Landsknecht for a Ronin and my Alchemist for a Troubadour about halfway, the result ended up taking almost all the difficulty away from bossfights, in exchange for making fights with regular enemies just a tad longer without the alchemist and landsknecht's attack-all capabilities.

Sometimes a wet slimy tunnel is just a wet slimy tunnel.
