Like I said in a previous post, I hate Steam too. I never could make it work at home, only at work. Even there, I can't figure out how to download a custom dungeon from Steam. It's really not intuitive.
Nexus seems clear and easy. I haven't downloaded a dungeon yet, but eventually will. I just don't want to see another dungeon before I complete mine.

How to download a custom dungeon through steam:
Open Steam. Click the community tab. Click the workshop subtab. Click the Grimrock workshop page. Browse the available custom dungeons until you find one you like.
Click the green subscribe button.
How to play a custom dungeon subscribed to from the workshop:
Open Legend of Grimrock. Select Custom Dungeon. Find newly subscribed custom dungeon on the list. Click it and play it.

Nexus is great site for distributing mods, it's a very committed modding community with oodles of experience and talent. I've used it in the past for the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series and there are a few other games supported other than LoG to give me reason to do so in the future. Uploading to at least these two sites will help LoG grow and benefit all players regardless of their version and preference.

Click the subscribe button? I thought this button was only to receive updates from the author of the thread. I didn't see this as some sort of "download" button.
Anyway, thanks for the instructions. I'll probably go with Nexus anyway.

I thought subscribing auto updated, though in this case that would be bad as your save files will have warnings. It seems subscribe doesn't even notify you of updates unless you check for yourself.

but how do you UPLOAD/ PUBLISH to Steam ? there are no clues when you arrive at the Grimrock workshop page, it's all about downloading not uploading

Never done it myself but it seems pretty straight forward:
- goto the LoG Workshop page on Steam
- there select "your workshop objects" on the right hand side
- on the upcoming page select "legal agreement" on the right hand side
- agree to the agreement
- start LoG
- enter the Dungeon Editor
- load your project
- in the "File" menu select "Publish to Workshop..."
and after that you need to set some permission so others can see your stuff
