That's the very same thing: 2 speakers only. Just closer to your ears.
Virtual surround is based on this prinziple: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head-relat ... r_function
This requires some extensive filtering and modification to the audio stream played which in turn caused audio quality loss.
It's not the same thign since sound will not be transferred over the surrounding air. And that will be also the problem with more than one speaker inside the cup. The transmission over the air is missing. So If you have a full dolby system even the soudn from behind reaches both ears. This is not the case with headphones. Can you provide a sourece where it is explained how such headphones work that is not sponsored by the gaming industry?

That is exactly what HRTF does.
It's the principle of how to modify an audio stream with filters, delays and other stuff to create the illusion of a surrounding with less then the required speakers for real surround. Naturally since the audio stream gets modified in multiple ways the result will never be as good as real surround.
MAybe we talk at cross-purposes. I understood your comments as supporting the idea of putting more speakers inside the ear cups (is that so? if yes, could you provide a source where it is (scientifically) explained how and that this works). At first glance, putting more drivers inside the cups contradicts the way the human brain processes sound since the transmission over air is missing. So the purrfect surround sound can only be obtained by a (stationary) 7.1 system.
However, using virtual surround or HFRT (not as in the video since no algorithms are used there) reduced the sound quality. Is there anything to add?
5.1 AND 7.1 headphones are not new - they exist - and yes they have multiple speakers built in...god dammit just google 5.1 headphone or 7.1 headphone and you will get this: https://www.google.de/search?q=5.1+head ... headphones
They aren't that expansive so try them out. the only issue i have with those headphones is, that the front speaker is actually on the left and right side(because...you know why). Other then that the sound separation works flawless(using logitech g430 - virtual surround - 2 real speakers and the roccat kave 5.1 - real surround) and my neighbours are very thankful when iam using them.
On TOPIC:
LoG1 supported and used at least my 5.1 speaker setup by using the system default setting. Left/right/front and rear speakers were all used correctly.
Excellent. I didn't have my surround sound headset back in LoG1 so I guess I didn't notice the option was there. Looking forward to playing the sequel tomorrow with headset surround sound. Which actually exists, works, and isn't an evil conspiracy everyone except a poster or two in this thread isn't in on
