I read through all the wonderful comments people were making (thank-you so much for your efforts to help) but it was as simple as turning off the cursor trail that I have used to help me see the tiny wretched thing. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you. Now I'm going to see if this will fix the similar issues I'm having with Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Many, many thanks.

PS (Ten minutes later.) Don't really have time to play this morning, but Mass Effect and Dragon Age now have wonderful cursors. Such a simple thing can make such a difference! Thanks again.
