Running under windows 10

I've been running my laptop with windows 10 in preview mode for some months and LoG2 has been running without problem but as of the last build (before release) it just refused to load. I've just rebuilt my laptop from scratch to try and get it running again but I'm left with the same fault. As soon as I try to start the game it just crashes (no screen mode change, just an immediate crash). I've checked the windows log and it just reports that it crashed and little more than that. No information on the faulting module, no trace, just the basic failure event record.

The weird bit is that on my desktop (also running windows 10 now) it runs just fine. Obviously it is somewhat different hardware but not a million miles apart.

Anyone else had similar problems or better still found the solution?

Can you post grimrock.log? It's at
My Documents\Almost Human\Legend of Grimrock 2\grimrock.log

Maybe the solution in this thread works for you:

If both your systems have the same edition of Windows 10 but the game now only runs on your desktop then my guess is your laptop's graphics driver fails. Best course of action would be to update to the latest video driver. Both AMD and nVidia released new versions on Win 10 release day so make sure to use those.

In case there is no new driver for your specific laptop gpu i.e. because it's an Intel build-in GPU at least reset the driver settings to default and retry.

No log file present in the folder, just the usual txt file and cfg file and a few save files (from when it did work)

Both laptop and desktop are running the latest version of the NVidia driver but my laptop is dual driver - it runs intel hd and NVidia and is supposed to switch automatically (and definitely has in the past - still does for other games), I can't tell if it is the intel/Microsoft hd graphics crashing or the NVidia graphics (if it is graphics at all).

Everything so far is running in default settings and since this is a clean build, everything is as up to date as it can be. Any old drivers are the same drivers I used previously and worked as intended.

Don't expect old drivers to work as they did before under a new OS especialy graphics and sounds.

With your laptop being dual gpu it should be easy to test if the problem is gpu related:
set the gpu switch to manual for LoG and try nVidia first, Intel second.

You obviously didn't read the post - the graphics drivers are new, both downloaded fresh through Microsoft's windows 10 driver repository.
The only old stuff is the bits that even Microsoft couldn't be bothered updating (like renesas usb 3).

As it turns out (and I've no idea why I didn't try this before) forcing LoG2 to use the integrated HD graphics allows it to run - somewhat disappointingly (as in barely usable). The NVidia driver is definitely up to date so the next question is what to change in the NVidia optimisation settings.

Download and re-install the newest nVidia driver for your laptop's gpu and use both the "Custom" and "New Install" options presented in the installer. Do NOT use Microsoft's drivers here!

When it comes to Intel HD graphics drivers you have no choice with whether or not to use Microsoft - Intel handed responsibility for them over to Microsoft years ago, functionality went backwards since they don't really care how good they are as long as they "work".

The Nvidia Windows 10 release drivers are currently delivered by Microsoft and are identical to the ones provided by Nvidia direct...

To prove a point I have uninstalled the existing driver, downloaded the latest driver direct from Nvidia and performed a clean install - and the end result is no change, except that now the Nvidia control panel crashes if you accidentally select "adjust image settings with preview"...

I guess this is going to be a long, twisting path

Of course you got a choice. Goto Intel Download Center and get your Intel HD graphics driver from there.

I know that Microsoft has i.e. new nVidia drivers; they sometimes force them onto Windows users via the Windows Update and if you don't pay attention to what updates are about to be installed they will install some inferior driver you will want replaced ASAP. Had that happen few times during the past years and i always ended up re-installing the original nVidia driver because the Microsoft version was just a crippled version of the original, locking users out of it's setup.
