Towering behemoth mountains of praise

Post by obeahmon »

In my 26 years of gaming full time I have never encountered a title quite like Grimrock. I, for the last four days, have been bathed in this simple, subtle, and sinister environment.

First I feel it is vastly important to commend you for the shotgun of patches over the last sixty or so hours. Your development team, in this time, has done more to improve your already stellar product than other studios offering a far inferior product ever do.

Hail the end of coddling. Maybe its that I am seeking greater challenges these days but it seems to be a running theme lately that games simply do not require the gamer to pay attention. I can't hardly nod off in grimrock w/o ending up in some kind of detrimental situation. The days of plowing head long down a hallway to pew pew face on whatever pops up ended WAYYY before i finished level one.

Many a semon have i pushed on my friends about "three routes to an objective." I never could see why this ideology dominated level design, was it taught in schools? The quixotic nature of pathing in grimrock not only twists my understanding of spatial reality but it definitely has sparked a HELLS YES or three.

The adversarial entourage has been a mixed bag of awesome so far (lvl6 atm). From swarm to solo these angry inhabitants keep me hopping. I am rockin a fairly standard group with a couple melee dps up front and ranged/caster dps in the back, so far nothing has been trivial. Once I got my feel for the world and got a big stick to wield, things just got more complicated...mad respect. I have to lay this one out because it is just too good to let go: I was somewhere on lvl 5 I think when i fell through a pit (got the gravity kill achievement) and was surrounded by angry skeletons on all sides stabbing and shooting at me. Killed a four pack thanks to some mid combat potion fabricating, lost most my team though due to kettling. Finally ranged dps made a hole in their O-lineup and i ran for it, with only my caster at 10%. Wouldn't you know it...right as i get to the stairs one of those bastards caught me in the back with an arrow. Game over with the stairs in the next square away! "you have met your match, no-one can defeat me...hahahhahaaa" style. Sure i cut it off to brood and heal my gamer pride, wasnt an hour before i ran back in there and trashed the place flat.

I guess what im trying to say is: Spot on! It is refreshing to see developers hit their mark without being rushed to release prematurely or blah blah blah. Your team crushed alpha->retail like a bodybuilder in a twig snapping contest. /ENCORE
