...but being completely technically illiterate, I have no idea whether my graphics card on my laptop will cope or will wither away and die under the pressure. Having searched the forums for some guidance, all the stories of melting/exploding graphics cards have not reassured me either.

Problem I have got is that the label on my laptop with all the info on states my card is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M; when I manually checked it, it says it is a Intel HD graphics 3000?? Feel free to shoot me down in flames for my ignorance but anyone let me know how either of these would compare to the min/max of ATI Radeon X1600 or NVIDIA GeForce 7600 / ATI Radeon HD 2900 or NVIDIA GeForce 8800 or better?

My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5750G:

Intel Core i5-2410M @2.3-2.9GHz
Nvidia GeForce GT540M 1GB
4GB DDR3 @1333MHz

It runs Legend of Grimrock just fine at low-medium settings, which still looks very good indeed! What's possible is that your laptop contains both an integrated graphics card as well as the GT540M by Nvidia. This is the case with mine. If you set your energy management profile to High Performance (and it should do this automatically when you plug in and charge your laptop) the laptop will automatically use your Nvidia card rather than the integrated graphics card. It just reverts back to using the integrated graphics chip to save power when you are not gaming / processing video / doing something GPU-demanding.

If you worry that your laptop/GPU is going to overheat, consider buying a laptop cooler to keep it nice and comfy. This is what I use and I would highly recommend it.

Bottom line; if you have a GT540M the game will work fine. You will have to tune down a few graphics settings but even at the very lowest settings the game still looks lovely.
