how do you make potions?

You will find a mortar and pestle. Open it like a bag and drop bottles and ingredients into it. If it is a good recipe, a resulting potion will appear allowing you to take it. If not, nothing will happen.

I think they should have made this into a skill that any class can learn...

nah, then there would be a heated discussion along the line of those who think "Alchemy Skill" is a waste in skillpoints because you cant get to skill level 50 and dont have your character broken
because people dont play what feels natural anymore... always power-building.
