Smaller party...

How come I can't start a game from the character creation screen with less than 4 prisoners? The "Start Game" button is greyed out until 4 characters are created, but I want to play with less than 4 characters. I want to challenge myself. Am I missing something or does anyone know a way around this? Thanks.

you could play with 4 and let 3 die and never revive,or play as Toorum.

im sure this will be the 1st thing in a patch but until then, unless someone has an config patch???

That was one of the fun things about bloodwych and dungeon master - you could choose to go with one or fewer characters than normal.

One thing to note is that say for example you wanted to make a three charcter party in grimrock. You could make the portrait a skull, give them no skills and points and ignore them all game. Now and then a creature would hit them instead of your other characters, but in terms of experience it wouldn't have any effect. You can also kill them by making them weak and blasting yourself with spells then resting.

I'm actually hoping there will be a more proper way for this eventually.

I personally liked finding NPCs to join your party, so it would be awesome if we could make dungeons where you start out with only one character, but could run into NPCs who would then join your party. Once you're at four, if you want another NPC to join your party, you'd have to kick an existing party member from the party.

If then we could somehow add dialog to the game, it is no longer "Your four random hero dudes and gals", but "Your random hero, that Minotaur you saved from the prison, that Rogue that won't shut up about finding treasure, and that Mage that is constantly being cynical." I think it would give more immersion than just four stat sticks.

As for the OP:
SpoilerShow
Did you try Toorum mode, where you have only a single character to play with?

Hehe. ;)

Well, it's just simply, silly examples. But it would be nice to have them occasionally talk about about their history or have them ask questions to each other, y'know, to get the atmosphere going and make them a little more than mere stat sticks.

That would be a nice thouch! I remember my days with the EotB-series and it was always exciting to come across another adventurer who could join your party, or you found the remains of an unfortunate adventurer you could resurrect. Then came the the dilemma; is there room for the new character, or do I have to ditch someone else?

My favourite characters I found was Kirath (EotB) and San-Raal (EotB2). Happy days. :)

Seriously, I could not fathom for the life of me that the developers within the near future would not add the option(s) of allowing less than a four (4) character team. Not to mention, Ironman and Permadeath playing styles. This game is almost "screaming" for these add-ons.
