Purpose of that pressure plate in Goro Temple II? [SPOILER]

I wonder what purpose the pressure plate has one can find in Level 10, Goromorg Temple II. The plate is in the north of the big room with the centered teleporter, after the first encounter of the Goromorgs. There are two faces and the plate in the middle. When you step on it, a poison cloud appears.

Does it have any purpose or is it linked to a riddle or something? Or is it just a "joke" by the devs?

Ain't that the place where you first have all the doors open up in front of you, and then later on the walls to the side disappear?

It's just a trap, but you might actually step in there by accident, just from following the doors, or worse, stap in there by accident when backing away from a Goromorg.

Yes you are right, all the doors and walls on the side open to reveal the big room.

Ok, if it's just a trap, then I did not miss anything there - just wanted to be sure it doesn't open a secret door or something

Yes, nothing else noticeable... now that we know this, it's kind of funny that everyone steps onto it
