I'm a newbie, I may need help!

Hey guys! I'm iwilkilalzmBs, and I was just wondering if this game would be easy enough for someone who has NEVER played a dungeon crawler before. I know that since I have never played one, pre-ordering a dungeon crawler is sort of a gamble, but I had some money lying around and decided I would buy this game (Thanks to Totalbiscuit!) Anyways, back to the original topic. I have played countless rpgs before (Skyrim, Fallout 3, Pokemon) and I know about magic systems like the one in this game (thank you, Magicka!) How big of a chance is there that I will suck at Grimrock and will never get anywhere? Thanks for reading! -iwilkilalzmBs

If you are new to the genre all I can say is think a bit before you make any decisions and explore EVERYWHERE! I personally would advise you to spend at least 1 hour making your party. I mean a developer who knew everything took 15 hours so you'll probably take 20-30 depending on how thorough you will be. Spend 1 hour to make smart choices about the 4 heroes you are lugging into the dungeon.

The games that probably inspired this one are full of invisible walls, fake floors and all kinds of traps you might see in a tabletop D&D game. I'm sure there will be many maze like areas in the game. And always remember a dead end might be a dead end but sooner or later if you keep looking you'll find treasure where you thought there was nothing. If you haven't played dungeon master or anything like it you might need to take a while to get used to the combat. As such you basically have a front line and a back line relative to enemies (later you'll have to deal with being flanked but for now just think of 1 directional enemies).

That being said 4 fighters isn't the wisest option because only two can fight at any given time due to weapon reach (until you get a polearm or spear or something). A better option would be two fighters and two rogues. Two guys unload with rocks/arrows/daggers and two use melee weapons. Granted you start with almost nothing but they wouldn't make a bow skill if there was never going to be a bow for you to use right? But who knows how long you might have to wait for it..... (and there may only be 1 really good bow in the entire game... we don't know!)

But you're probably stabbing yourself in the foot for not bringing a caster as they have unique power. If you had two casters each could specialize over pretty much every spell category but you'd have a weaker party overall in terms of carrying capacity and health. But sometimes glass cannons really shine... especially late in the game where they have such destructive power that enemies don't last long enough to do much retaliation.

You could always make a character to be a hybrid.... I was considering going with 2 melee fighters and having a rogue/priest style hybrid and a wizard as my fourth character. You owe it to yourself to take some time to really consider what you are picking before you just head down into the dungeon. I'd hate to find myself 10 hours into the game only to find that I've made extremely poor decisions.

In my opinion, LoG is much more accessible than any of the previous dungeon crawlers. The "training levels" at the beginning are well designed, some annoying features have been eliminated or trivialized (you auto-pickup throwables, no need to pick up every one of them again, just walk over them), and so on.

It's a much modern take of the genre, which is to say, don't make a game challenging due to bad controls =)

I suggest you use the predefined party which is well balanced. There is also the easy difficulty level which makes the fights easier, so you might want to try that first. I'm sure you'll do pretty fine!

That is completely awesome! I hate to admit but I was actually considering NOT bringing a rogue because I didn't want to pick up all the stones/knives/etc and put them back in my inventory. That was one really annoying aspect of dungeon master.... after a fight you had to pick up your arrows and then you had to put them in the quiver. That might not sound like a big deal but if you are running two rogue characters that's a lot of rather unnecessary moving and clicking.
