why do you love these "old" dungeon crawlers games ?

I wondered myself why I loved so much this game (and all the old one like eye of the Beholdr, dungeon master, Lands of Lore, ewizardry, etc...) with its simple technology and repeating textures.
I think that it is the way we explore the dungeon... square by square... Every corner may bring a surprise, an encounter, a trap... You never know what you'll meet next, even if textures are always the same, traps always the same, monsters always the same...
This game design offers multiples possibilities for creating puzzles, mazes, enigms...
There is more suspens in these dark corridors than in an open worlds like Oblivion, Gothic, etc... (I loves these games too, thought)

For what reasons do you players loved the game ?

Hi there.

- the overall atmosphere was and is a blast
- it is not only about the skills and attributes of your party-members, but also and especially about your personal skill; it is YOU, the gamer, who has to solve puzzles and riddles; it is YOU, the gamer, who has to move around in order to avoid being eaten in a tough fight; so it is - actually - a more intense level of interaction between you and the game. In other games like for example the old SSI games (Pools of Radiance, Pools of Darkness, Champions of Krynn, Dark Knight of Krynn etc.) you only decided the position and actions of your partymembers, anything else was decided by the randomized effects of the game-engine; although it looks very different, this is just as true with games like Morrowind, Oblivion, Gothic I to tenthousand, probably even Skyrim or/ and especially MMORPGs ...
(everything being said here is just an opinion based upon experiences ...)
- you get what you expect, and still there is enough surprise in the box ...
- very likely: although the game-concept are very simple and basic, they add up to a challenging and breathtaking game

Pretty much the reasons above... A lot of it has to do with - being older - these are the games I grew up on. There was no fancy God Of War, Skyrim, or anything like that. When I was first getting into gaming, they were TEXT adventure games. ("You are standing at the edge of the forest. You can go (N)orth to the Temple, (E)ast towards the River, or (W)est back into the forest?") I then got into RPGs, which consisted of Wizardry 1. So this is what I grew up with for many, many years. This is what I loved. And what I still love.
