Untold story

I remember I died.
Don't feel sorry for me, I deserved it and NO, there's no afterlife. No gardens, no infernal flames and no light at the end of the tunnel.
Only nothing.
My name's Bret, I like to think of myself as a "treasure hunter". Others call me "grave robber". They have such different views on this.
With my friend Jamaine we "found" some more or less ancient tombs, full of all wealth. The legitimate owners surely don't need that anymore, so...
For instance, what about the High Priest of Zuul (at that time the most important cult in the kingdom), who died one year ago, and his shiny gold amulet?
Zuul cultists were very angry with us and the King had to choose between our death and a civil war.
We share the cell with Steve, an extra muscular ex-gladiator enemy of all the minotaurs. Fortunately for us he had nothing against lizards.
He told us with pride how he beheaded that flabby horns and extracted the gut of his friend. Just between ourselves, killing the Crown Prince of Xaac and his bodyguard wasn't a good thing.
Last came Eugene. Raving mad. He incinerated his master because he thought he was the head of a interstellar conspiracy...
The day before the execution the guards chained us togheter and bear us off. The captain said: "And you're the four to take to Grimrock? Where's the insectoid? NO, I don't care. Take them out."
I didn't know what he was talking about, but I was glad I did not die back then.
We traveled on a wagon for seven days, then on an airship up to the top of a weird mountain.
Up there they told us: "By order of the King, you are free" and we were thrown in a deep pit.
It was a nice fall, about 30 feet. We fell on something soft, were the corpses of the previous trip, I guess.
Jamaine said: "Something bring those corpses here, they did us a favour." We were in a large room, with hollows on two sides, a grate at the door and a torch.
Chained and in a cell. We were free to die.
Near the grate there was an inscription: "Choose your fate. Perish in this cell or pick up the torch".
