Omenpapa's questions reminded me about this:

It's not possible to have 2 or more magic element shields active at the same time i.e. Fire Shield and Poison Shield.

Is this intended, a bug or an oversight?

my guess is this is completely intentional. You have to strategically pick your shield based on enemies nearby
