I can't say I appreciate nexus

I just had an idea last night, of a website that would be dedicated to Grimrock modding. While browsing in Grimrock Nexus, I had the feel that it's not well organized and far from user friendly. It would be awesome that someone made a website that only publish complete dungeons, that have seperate pages for Dungeons, Props, Monsters, Items etc. And of course with no request of a login to download the files. Also I noticed that there are files in .rar other in .zip, all I have to say is that it is sad to have to download multiple programs to uncompress the files when Windows already handle zip files.

I can't say I'm a good web designer, but with a comunity so awesome as this one i think we can find some solutions here.

Like HaunterV said, 7zip is all you need (and you should have it anyway as it's far better than rar or zip and can handle both and most other formats as well). The Nexus has different pages for dungeons, props etc, just look at the categories. The reason why you need to login to download files is that not all people are nice and there have been problems with leechers and script kiddies trying to harm the site. That's why you need a login or at least some kind of security code on more or less any other site as well. Security codes are far more annoying than logging in and where is the problem anyway? You do it once and then you stay logged in. Good luck finding someone with unlimited bandwidth who has no security measures at all.

The so called 'beta' mods are generally more a problem with Grimrock mods, guess that's the price you pay for a very easy to use editor. People quickly make a (terrible) dungeon because it's so easy to simply paint a dungeon layout and add a few monsters and then they want to release it asap and can't wait to bug test, balance or even finish it. I agree that a 'beta' category wouldn't hurt though, but DarkOne is a nice guy and I'm sure if you would ask he would add it in no time.

Imo it doesn't get much better than Nexus, there were a lot of changes and improvements during the last years and I don't think any other modding site can compare. Whether it's Fileplanet, Steam Workshop, Curse or Filefront, none of them are as good as Nexus.

I agree that Nexus + Steam is a pretty good solution for the file sharing. 7z is an app that anyone downloading game mods (except using Steam Workshop) should have installed. I've found mods in all sorts of wonderful formats, and 7z is very useful.

I wonder if there is a solution to separating the quality mods from the unfinished / beta dungeons that Phitt raised though. Perhaps we could host a monthly forum poll for "Dungeon of the Month" and then have a stickied forum thread and/or a wiki-post which lists the winners historically, along with download links and some basic info about each one.

Problem with Steam is that size limit. I want to put my next dungeon on steam since nexus has a lot less traffic and little to no feedback, but I won't be able to without really limiting what assets I use. So I hope more people get used to using nexus.

I would love a good quality kept-up-to-date list of good finished dungeons, but I'm hesitant to start managing one myself. Maybe.

@JohnWW I agree with the "DotM" but would like to have the link here to the Nexus/Steam that's sticky.

@Soap I have said that before about the feedback on Nexus, but luckily alot of the uploads come from this community so there is usually a (WIP) or [Mod] post somewhere here with a link and the feedback usually filters back here.

One good thing about the Nexus is if someone isn't a file nerd, the NMM is super easy to use to turn on/off and delete mods.
I don't use Steam and probably never will (never say never) and that's another reason I like the Nexus. The guy that runs it is a member here, not saying the good people at Valve aren't I don't know, but I get a warm fuzzy knowing I can communicate with them directly.

I don't know.. on one side it would help good mods to get at store front. On the other it has the risk of relegating perfectly good dungeons becuase they arrived just second. Maybe we should think about a good system of repechage.

I'm with you! I bought Grimrock on Steam just to have access to the workshop, but in the end I always launch the GoG version I have (yes, I bought it twice  ). I also appreciate Nexus for this single reason :)

I can think of an idea, with Google Drive and Blogger (or WordPress) it would not be that hard to have some good brandwith and a lot of free space to hold the files, as well as an easy way to share the files. I did this for my small company website and it's not that bad (I understand it,s not the same thing). I don't think security or brandwith would be much of a problem since the files are hosted on Google drive. Also let's not forget that it's free unless you want a dedicated domain. But at 10 $ per year, I would gladly pay it if it can be a good place for the community. Let me know what you think, I think we can menage pages in blogger via multiple accounts so help would be welcome if the project is to start.

This idea of a month forum poll sounds like the best idea I heard all month! IDEA OF THE MONTH

I bought LOG and LOGII and neither time did I buy them on Steam, it just seems way too controlling to me, so I have ended up with Nexus and I certainly do appreciate Nexus but everyone to their own!! Good we have the choice
